By Day 4 we were losing all sense of time - what day of the week it was and what time of day it was. We crossed into the 2nd time zone from home so that added to the sense of confusion.
We paid for our campsite as soon as the office opened at 8am and hit the road. We would've liked to leave earlier to beat the heat, but had to wait until the office was open to settle our tab. We drove out of KS and into CO.
(Excuse the bug-speckled windshield. We got quite good at drive-by shootings on this trip;
we got almost all the state signs without stopping at a single one.)
We had a little hiccup in the itinerary. We had planned to go to Rocky Mountain National Park next. But we couldn't find an available campsite. Not only was it a weekend, it was a holiday weekend. Apparently dads everywhere decided camping in the Rocky Mountains was the prefect Fathers Day get-away this year. Any RV park that wasn't full required a 2 night stay, not to mention prices that made you suck in your breath. We weighed some options and decided to eliminate RMNP and head straight to Colorado Springs. We wanted the RV park that offered free fishing, but they were booked. We managed to snag one of the last sites available at the KOA. RV Road Trip lesson #1- reserve sites ahead for weekends.
We started seeing antelope & prairie dogs. Do you know how hard drive-by shootings are of those?! I could add multiple photos of blurry fields, but I think you get the idea.
We only drove 150 miles that day and arrived at the RV park early, around 3:30. (Notice our twin in the site next to us.) Another very nice, clean KOA.
1st time using an RV park laundry. Burning through quarters, at $1.75 per load.
Makes me thankful for my washer & dryer, and especially my clothesline at home (free drying)!
Another thing we are thankful for since the trip is our Wi-Fi at home. We used to complain about slow connections in our rural area, but we found out that ain't nuthin' compared to campground Wi-Fi. "Are you connected?" No, I can't get on." ... "It kicked me off. Again." ... "If you stand outside, over there, you can get 2 bars." ... "This is painfully slow! Maybe if I get up before everyone in the campground is awake I can get faster service."
We ordered pizza for our evening meal, but an hour later- still no pizza. We convinced R. to call again and it turns out they lost our order. So we got the pizza & breadsticks free with a 2 liter thrown in for good measure. Free is good, right? What's another 30 minutes?
We found this bit of loveliness down over the bank from our campsite. So relaxing.
