The Millers Go RVing - Day 15

Day 15 was the best day EVER! Read on.

The Crescent City CA hotel did not provide breakfast so we went down the street to a fast food joint. We got our morning dose of humor when an older gentleman was trying to order a bacon cheeseburger for breakfast; the employee tried unsuccessful to explain they are only serving breakfast. Apparently anything with bacon on it qualifies as breakfast in his book. He walked off muttering about going to Jack in the Box because it's easier.

As we were leaving CA, we saw the fields of Easter lilies; this is where the majority of America's lilies are grown. Even though it wasn't the right time of year for them to be blooming, there were a few random blooms confirming it was the lily fields- cool to see. We were watching for the cranberry bogs near Bandon OR but didn't see any. We saw a produce stand advertising fresh blueberries but not in enough time to stop; we figured there would be more later but that wasn't so we missed that pleasure. We went through the [only] area where myrtlewood grows but didn't stop to buy anything.
It was 53* in Oregon -such an extreme switch from the first 2 weeks of our trip.
The OR coast is breath-taking beautiful.

Around noon we arrived at SpinReel Rentals. We had to sign contracts and take half an hour of safety training before we were allowed off the lot. They lay on the warnings pretty thick, but when we got out on the dunes all we needed was a little common sense.
We rented a quad for each of the kids and a 2-seater for R & I.

We had SO MUCH FUN!!! The hour went by so fast. We tried to extend for another hour but the machines were already booked. The OR Dunes were so much more fun than the CO Dunes because they weren't miserable hot and we were not trying to walk up them. The pictures don't do justice to how steep some of the dunes were and how much fun it was to go zooming down them. Or the challenge of trying to climb straight up them without getting stuck. We had to get a smaller quad for A because she is a minor but once she got the hang of the 2-wheel drive she did great.
We have 100% agreement this was the absolute BEST day of the whole trip! Everyone was in a great mood when we left North Bend. We are positive we need to go back to OR just to ride dune buggies again. If you ever get a chance to go to Oregon, do NOT miss the opportunity to ride the sand dunes. It's worth every dollar [eg. the many dollars], in our opinion.

We continued on up Rt. 101, stopping at a couple of lighthouses along the way.

We were not there at the right time or day of the week to get a tour inside any of them, but I have been inside lighthouses before so I was okay with that.

We arrived at our hotel in Lincoln City around 5:30pm. Again we had a family suite; I should have taken pictures because it was the nicest room we had on the whole trip but this is the only one I took in the room-

The first order of business was to find food. I was absolutely sure I had to eat west coast seafood- Dungeness crab in particular- on this trip but my hubby is seriously allergic to shellfish and most of my kids turn up their nose at it, so we had to find a place that had something for everyone. We ended up at Mo's.
We had a table overlooking the water. There were people fishing & crabbing off the dock outside. If we would've gotten there earlier- before we were so hungry- it would've been cool to have JS catch me something and have them grill it up for me.
JS didn't want the house salad that came with his meal so I ate it. It was loaded with small shrimp. Awesome!

I had the Bouillabaisse so I could try shrimp, salmon, cod, oysters, clams & crab legs. It was delicious! More than I could eat so I got the leftovers in a takeout box, but tragically we left it behind in the hotel fridge the next morning.
JS tried the crab and agreed it was good but he didn't think it was worth having to crack & dig for that small amount of meat. He had the chicken alfredo; R & JR had burgers and A. tried the chili in a sourdough bread bowl. We found out the west coast sourdough bread really is sour. JR had a piece of Snickers pie, and the rest of us shared a slice of peanut butter pie.

A & I walked across the street from our hotel to the beach for sunset.
This is where we got our feet wet in the Pacific Ocean.

They had the most gorgeous blue hydrangeas growing everywhere in this part of Oregon.
I lugged laundry up & down 4 flights of stairs and spent the rest of the evening hanging out in the stuffy little guest laundry of the hotel so we'd have clean clothes to wear again.

The Millers Go RVing - Day 14

I was woke by a text that came in at 5:45am; people back home seemed to forget that we were several time zones away and would text us quite early in the morning.
The free breakfast with this hotel was only pre-packaged pastries, cold cereal and oj, but then again we weren't paying $400/night for the room (we saw as high as $770). Considering the cereal snobs in this family [ahem], we simply exercised our right to visit McDonalds for a hot breakfast.
We drove across the Golden Gate bridge to leave San Francisco...
A & I would've liked to drive by the "Painted Ladies" [houses] yet, but not everyone in our party was agreeable. Saving that for next trip.

Day 14 was Redwoods Day, on our way north along the CA coast. We did detour a few miles for the privilege of driving through a redwood tree. Another thing we could not have done in the RV. On the way through the forest to the Chandelier Tree, we saw where they were working on carving old tree stumps into wildlife...

I have always wanted to drive through a redwood. However, I did not actually drive through it then because I got out to take the pictures; the lucky young people who actually got to do this activity were not near as impressed/appreciative as I was.

We made it to the Pacific Ocean!

We didn't make it this far in Big Bertha like we wanted, but Jane got us safely to the west coast.
One of my kids gave me 1/2 a sand dollar he found, and another picked up a whole Dungeness crab claw for me. Which I added to my beach collection in my laundry room.

We stopped at the Lady Bird Johnson Grove of the Redwood National Forest. The road up to it was steep- again something we could not have reached with the RV. It was chilly so no one wanted to hike the entire loop through the grove. At 58*, it was 50* cooler than Nevada 3 days prior. What a switch!
Besides massive trees, there were the most gorgeous ferns.

The coast is just so pretty we had to stop again
When we arrived at our hotel, this was our room's ocean view...
We had a family suite, which worked out pretty well for our size of family. Would you say we hit the jackpot with a red tub?
There was no a/c or fan -in fact the windows were open and we had "natural air conditioning". Fortunately for us we were no longer in 100* weather and it was quite comfortable. There was good Wi-Fi and the owners were very accommodating.
R took A & I down the street to Battery Park lighthouse. We were a little late- the tide was too high to get over to the island.

We walked out on the jetty to get sunset pictures.
The garage back in NV called mid-morning to confirm that Big Bertha did need a new transmission, and to secure a down payment on the bill. Yikes! The price tag on this trip just took a sudden hike. But what choice do we have? One good thing- they will fix the parking brake while they have her apart anyway. They assured us they are doing everything they can to have her fixed by the end of the day Friday because Monday is a holiday. This is not the greatest news though, because we had planned to be in Seattle on Friday. The farthest possible point  we could be from NV- a whopping 1200 miles. It would actually work better for us if it wouldn't be finished till we are a little farther around the loop. R & I started going over our schedule and trying to figure out how to make it work. Because it does a lot of good, I start dreading the long drive awhile, too.

The Millers Go RVing - Day 13

Hmm, should my title be changed to The Millers Go MiniVanning or The Millers Go Rentaling???

We wanted to get to San Francisco before the afternoon fog rolls in, but with our late night we didn't get on the road very early. We also stopped at Walmart to stock up on snacks & drinks -is this the 4th or 5th case of water? We bought a cooler to fill with ice every morning at the motels so we'd always have cold water to drink. We were not going to be caught so unprepared again!

We had smooth sailing up Rt. 101, passing by citrus groves and vineyards.

We got to the Golden Gate Bridge around 1pm. Fortunately, it was a clear day. This was another of those pinch-me-to-see-if-it's-real moments.
It was 95* on the outskirts of San Francisco, but when we got to the Bay it was only 68*. After 100*+ heat for almost 2 weeks, it felt cool to us so we dug out jackets for the first time.

We walked on the bridge as far as the first tower. It was really windy up there.
 Alcatraz

This girl got to visit the east coast & the west coast within 2.5 months time!
Next we drove to our hotel- the Howard Johnson on Lombard Street. We wanted to check in early so we could snag one of the 12 parking spots in their parking garage. I can hardly believe I really got to stay in a hotel on the famous Lombard Street! This would not have happened if we had been in the RV. (The original plan was an RV park in the city that had shuttle service to the Bay area)
JS had an altitude headache so he chilled at the hotel, but the rest of us set out on foot for Fisherman's Wharf. Lombard street was a steep uphill climb.
At the top, sure enough, was the world-famous crookedest street!
I had my heart set on a trolley ride in San Francisco. Our original idea was to catch the trolley at the top of Lombard Street and ride down to Fisherman's Wharf. But when the trolley arrived, the grip man advised the folks ahead of us it's only 4 blocks down to the Wharf- hinting that it's smarter to walk down and board there because tickets cost the same no matter how far you ride. We realized right away that it's foolish to pay $7pp to ride 4 blocks when we could ride the entire length of the line for that price, so we altered our plan to riding back uphill when we're finished at the Wharf.
We browsed the shops of Fisherman's Wharf.
At the famous sourdough bread bakery, they had crocodile bread on display in the window! All our Ghana friends- this pic is for you.
 We dined at Johnny Rockets...
Chicken bacon melt, Rt. 66 burger, chili cheese fries, root beer float
Then we continued on down to Pier 39...
And discovered the Crepe Café! We should've waited to eat!
R & I "glushted" but were too full.
Of course, if my DH wouldn't be allergic to shrimp, this would've been a must...
We watched the sea lions for awhile

We could also see Alcatraz from there
We watched a juggler perform in the square. Here he is juggling knives on a unicycle.
R went to In & Out Burger to get JS some food while the rest of us did our souvenir shopping. We tried to get on the trolley but the line to get on was unbelievably long. No way could we wait around that long when JS was waiting on his food. So very disappointing!
So we trudged uphill 4 blocks, then down the steep Lombard St to our hotel. A & I were lagging behind because we kept stopping to take pictures. There were the most amazing succulents growing everywhere!
And then we started taking pictures with garage doors, too. We couldn't help ourselves- it's in our blood. lol. Dad, these pics are for you.

R went on ahead with JS's food but JR patiently stayed with us as our guardian. Till we got to the hotel it was getting just dark enough that it felt time to get off the street and into the safety of our room. (There was a gay pride march that day and several people were stabbed, according to news reports.) But A & I fell in love with San Francisco. We already started saving to fly back and spend more time there.
