We tried to teach the kids to play Steal the Bacon. Interesting! Not a lot of 'happy medium' with being aggressive -it was either all-out war over the 'bacon' or avoidance, but they loved it and wanted to play it again after lunch. Which is what counts.
A 4-way tug-of-war
We kept the water balloon till last so we wouldn't have another ongoing water mess.
The reserve had these handy-dandy pumps that made filling water balloons a cinch.
We filled a 5 gallon bucket, which still didn't last very long among 25 kids!
This flyer posted on the bulletin board cracks me up!
When we got back to Hudson, the guys split more firewood while the girls went to the beach.
(There may or may not have been a little resentment about that.)
Next up, the first group went for a plane ride. JR's #1 highlight of the trip!
The pilot even let him fly the plane.
(To his disappointment, it was only for a few minutes and only in a straight line.)
And this is the group that lived to tell about it!
There are lots of seagulls in Hudson. Some of the youth conducted an experiment with the willing subjects. According to YouTube, seagulls will explode if they consume carbonated drinks. Is that really true?
Well, all we know for sure is root beer doesn't work!
A quaint little gym for playing volleyball
***************************
Wednesday we did our 3rd Kids Club. This time there was a very nice, modern gym, which was great because it rained and all our activities had to be indoors.
The guys added the story of David & Goliath to our routine.
Has Goliath ever been outfitted in hockey gear before?
JR read the story while JS & T acted out Goliath and M was David.
It was a hit! Literally & figuratively.
Even the little guys are naturals at hockey.
Like kids everywhere, they want love & attention.
JS in the kitchen is a rare sight indeed, but all the guys took their turn on the kitchen duty schedule.
The plan was for everyone to pick blueberries on the way back from Kids Club, but it was pouring down rain. Flexibility, flexibility.
But one thing about rain in the north is it blows over quickly.
So the girls still got to pick wild blueberries.
A bear was spotted not too far from this patch but we didn't have any competition from him as the berries were plentiful. We picked a gallon in 30 min. Fresh blueberries to snack on, blueberry crisp and even some left to bring along back to the USA.
A couple girls stayed behind to help the guys with wood splitting & stacking...
...while R, JS & V helped build a wheelchair ramp onto the church.
Plane Ride Group 2
Plane Ride Group 3
(R & I with our boys & V)
I'm not normally a fan of small planes but this was a smooth ride.
Only problem being I had the headset that didn't work so I missed the commentary.
Sioux Lookout from the air
(I tried to mark the locations where we lodged but my photo software wouldn't let me.
For my family- Merle's house is in the development near the center of the photo.
The guys stayed at the pilot/pastor's house which is just off the right side, along that highway.)
Hudson Ontario
(We were based out of the white house on the lower center of the photo.)
So much bush & water in this part of Canada
Our one & only family photo from the trip
Picnic by the lake
A great bunch of youth!
The guys may or may not have cooperated as well as it appears for this group photo
We rushed off to catch the tail end of a softball game.
They have some different rules for the game in Canada -interesting!
Allegedly one can't go to Canada without going to Timmy's
For myself I didn't think it was much different from USA Timmy's
but not being hungry probably had something to do with that.
Sand volleyball...
and a beautiful sunset!
Not pictured: the bugs that were "eating us alive".
So many free souvenirs [aka bug bites]!
