Last week was the annual Winter Break from school. We didn't go on a trip or anything major like that, but we filled our week with all manner of winter fun. A break from the winter blahs!
One day we made homemade doughnuts. It's becoming a tradition; I only get them made when I have extra hands to help with the frying & glazing.
What's not to love about fresh doughnuts?! And the wonderful smell that lingers after the work is done...
Another day A. & I went shopping. We're not very compatible shoppers; she being of the window-shopping, savor the experience variety while I'm a get-in-get-out, stick-to-the-list, uber-practical variety. She likes to shop for clothes, lotions, books... while I frequent grocery stores & scrapbook stores. Why browse if I don't have money to spend/don't plan to buy? is my mantra. She would say- so you know what is available, what you could have if you had money. :) Since we understand one another, shopping together is more fun. And she had worked hard detailing trucks for her dad so she would have spending money for this day. The other prize in her wallet was a Bath & Body Works gift card from babysitting. What fun to come home and go through our purchases! 90% of it was hers but I scored a few scrapbooking supplies to make it worth my while.
And then there was the day spent on the slopes. We had been planning this ever since last year (when we had to give it up on account of the weather). R. prefers skiing; the boys both [snow]board. A. & I go for the tubing. It was awesome- the slopes were not full and the weather was about right- not bitter cold nor warm enough to make slushy snow.
Just exactly how out-of-shape I am was evident by the end of the day when I could hardly walk anymore. Miss A. was embarrassed to be seen with her mother who was walking like a grandmother. Then the temperature started dropping at dusk. R. had neglected to wear heavy socks and couldn't even feel his toes any more as he limped back to the van at the end of the day. (His toes were still tingling several days later.) We must be getting too old to act like teenagers! But we sure had a fun day together as a family. Did I ever mention we love this stage of life?
We thought we were finished with Winter Break activities, but the next evening we were invited to a birthday party with our boys- we went out to eat and then ice skating at a rink with several other families. I'm not much of a skater so I stayed out of the way when the rink was full, but the men enjoyed it.
We ended Winter Break with an adrenaline rush of a different kind. A painful lump had us asking "Is it cancer?" Monday was spent shuttling JS to various doctor appointments and the hospital for numerous tests. We give a thumbs up to our local medical community for 'getting right on it' so we could get some answers. What a relief to have the lump diagnosed as a cyst, not cancer. Thank you, Jesus!
